Her financial expertise, and deep understanding of dairy farm businesses, has played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction.
Rhonda’s position is one of the four directors WestVic Dairy is currently recruiting to join the board of eight.
Three farmer positions and a specialist (non-farmer) position will become vacant at the AGM on Tuesday, October 7.
Rhonda joined the board driven by a desire to give back to the dairy industry — a sector that had been central to her 50-year career in agribusiness banking.
Encouraged by colleagues and members of the dairy community who saw her as a strong fit, she applied and was appointed as a specialist director in 2017.
“Joining the board was a way for me to give back to the dairy industry, which had been a major part of my banking career,” Rhonda said.
“It was also a way for me to be a voice for dairy farmers, as I was regularly on farms for appointments, hearing firsthand their stories and needs.”
From the outset, Rhonda’s goal was clear: amplifying the voices of farmers and ensuring a strong dairy region in south-west Victoria.
“My aim was to ensure that farmers voices were heard and that the industry in our region remained a powerhouse of dairy for Australia.”
As treasurer of the board for most of her term, Rhonda is especially proud of the organisation’s financial health and governance.
“I’m proud of the financial position of the organisation, along with the risk matrix and compliance policy and procedures we have in place,” she said.
“I’m also proud that we have a diverse board with many views, and the fact we work collaboratively together to achieve great outcomes for farmers.”
Rhonda found board meetings particularly rewarding, appreciating the opportunity to hear updates from across the region and work with a committed team.
Reflecting on her years serving the region’s dairy farmers, as both a director of the board and as an agribusiness banker, Rhonda has experienced personal and professional growth.
“Professionally I have received support from the Gardiner Foundation to undertake the Australian Institute Company of Director’s course, which has helped greatly in my understanding of governance and compliance. The course was completed as part of WestVic Dairy Board training.
“Personally, I get a lot of satisfaction in seeing our farmers achieving their goals and sharing success and best practice.
“I’ve also appreciated being a go-to person for advice and help on specific financial matters.”
Rhonda has proudly represented the WestVic Dairy Board at many industry and farming events over the years, often wearing both her banking and board hats.
“To be able to share the stories of great success and to also raise awareness of emerging needs that may otherwise have gone unidentified and bring them to the table is fulfilling.
“Being able to pivot quickly as needs arise is a great outcome for the industry.”
As Rhonda prepares to step down, she is pleased with her contribution to the organisation.
“I think leaving the compliance and financial part of the organisation in great shape is the most satisfying.”
Her hopes for WestVic Dairy remain aligned with the vision she had when she first joined.
“I hope that the organisation continues to be led by local people who understand and support local farmers.
“It’s important that risks continue to be identified and mitigated, to ensure issues are understood and resolved and to ensure farmers know where to go for any assistance they require.
“This is a unique region with unique issues that require local insights to be understood and resolved.”
When asked what advice she would give to future board members, Rhonda emphasised preparation and being present.
“Be fully present in board meetings and leave any other noise at the door as you walk in.
“Make sure you prepare for meetings by reading the board pack and making notes of any questions you have.
“That way you will contribute meaningfully and feel like you have achieved some great outcomes.”
