Showing expertise is shared within the Sunshine Coast Dexter Support Group.
Sunshine Coast Dexter Support Group is supportive and welcoming with a wide range of skills, understanding and depth of knowledge which spans more than 30 years of breeding and showing.
Dexters are a small breed and after some time in the wilderness their adaptability, low impact and trainability has been recognised. New owners appreciate their suitability for small acreage and hobby farms with the certainty of DCAI registration, knowing how and where your cattle comes from.

All members are able to draw on the diverse experience of others in the group for all aspects of Dexter husbandry, from breeding services, showing, calves and calving to registration, DNA testing through regular meetings, field days and workshops.
New members experience
We started our Dexter herd early in 2024 for our small acreage. The support group was our first point of contact and has been invaluable.
As complete beginners, we cannot thank the group enough for the support, guidance and friendship. We began with a couple of steers and soon decided this was not enough. We had fallen in love, so we bought some heifers, a cow and calf from the Greenhills and Newinn studs.

The On Farm Challenge 2024
The on-farm challenge is held every year and the judge travels to the farms of the studs involved. This is a great opportunity to begin the showing journey.
Four studs took part in the challenge last year, with Glenvale Park, Newinn, Greenhills and Hillton all entering a variety of classes.
Judging took place on October 5 with judge Darren Grevitt.
Show prep workshop 2025
Newinn, Hillton and Greenhills studs shared their show tips and experience at a three-hour workshop getting ready for the 34th Queensland Breed Show in April.
Hands-on training of cattle was a part of the demonstrations, as well as learning to wash, trim, lead and stand Dexter cattle to show standard.
All levels of cattle experience were catered for at this event, from fence sitters to experienced owners sharing their knowledge and expertise.
Show calendar
In 2025, the Dexter studs in the group have had a busy showing calendar at the Queensland Dexter Breed Show at Nanango, Fraser Coast Show at Maryborough, Bundaberg Show at Bundaberg and the Kilcoy Show at Kilcoy.
The On Farm Challenge will take place again in October .
The group is exploring different avenues to promote the breed and our breeding programs. A new Facebook page, Sunshine Coast Dexters group, is up and running. Like and share to support the group at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php? id=61568858810319
Other strategies include holding promotional stalls at farmers markets, farm trails and shows to try to reach different markets and audiences.
