Mathoura was relegated to another significant senior football defeat on Saturday but created more of a game than in recent weeks of Picola District Football League action.
Playing against fellow bottom five side Strathmerton, the Timbercutters ended a streak of four consecutive games conceding 200 or more and also logged their highest points total for the season (27).
The game still fell heavily in Strathmerton’s favour, the Bulldogs leading by 5.3 (33) to 1.0 (6) at quarter-time, which was extended to 11.6 (72) to 3.0 (18) by the main break.
The trend continued in the back half of the game and Strathmerton prevailed comfortably 25.12 (162) to 4.3 (27).
Mathoura will hope to build on this result as it continues a run against its lower table neighbours, taking on Katunga away on Saturday (3-6).

The Timbercutters’ home fixture against Starthmerton was competitive for much of the time on court, but Mathoura’s A-grade side remained a couple of steps behind over the four quarters.
The Bulldogs opened with a 14-7 first period, immediately putting Mathoura on the back foot, before extending the advantage to 11 by half-time.
The game slowly slipped from Mathoura’s grasp, Strathmerton winning the second half by seven goals to eventually walk out the winner 50-32.
