The annual Vinnies PJ Day tradition is a chance to spread their charitable spirit and share the warmth with others in need this winter.
The school’s event co-ordinator Tina Pisasale said the day is about supporting the St Vincent De Paul Society’s winter appeal.
“It is about two reasons, one of which is about getting clothes, non-perishable foods and money donations to Vinnies to help them help others,” Miss Pisasale said.
“The other is to help make the children and the community aware that there are people in need and who are much less fortunate than us, and to make people aware of some of the services Vinnies provides.”
Friday started with the whole school gathering in the playground, where warm toasties and cups of Milo were served before the annual ‘pyjama parade’.
Parading in their year groups and with music to inspire them, the students showed off their winter outfits.
Awards were given in each stage group, with separate award categories for grooviest pyjamas, best bed hair, most loved bed toy and best ensemble.
St Michael’s principal Nick Braybon said PJ Day has become a very important event each year.
“Thanks to all the organisers, Miss Tina Pisasale and the people from St Vincent De Paul society. It is a great part of the social justice tradition at our school,” he said.
Following the parade, the school’s Mini Vinnies group members helped collect the donation, which have been taken to Vinnies Services in Wellington St to be distributed to local families.
