Social Story is designed to reduce barriers to library access and participation.
By offering Social Story, the library aims to empower its neurodiverse patrons and their families with tools to better prepare for their library visit.
This short, informative story uses accessible language and visuals to outline social situations, helping individuals navigate new environments with confidence and help reduce anxiety associated with unfamiliar settings.
Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn welcomed the new tool, saying the story provided detailed information about the library experience, such as how to travel to the library, what the building looked like, and the experience they may have at the library.
“Libraries are places of community connection and lifelong learning, and we want to ensure everyone feels safe and supported when they visit,” Cr Hearn said.
“A Social Story is a tool to support visitors by clearly explaining what they can expect during a library visit.
“They can be really helpful for planning visits during quieter times, identifying suitable activities, and understanding how to behave in the library setting.”
Visitors to Benalla Library are encouraged to read the story often and preferably two weeks in advance of their library visit.
