After starting the day with a three-shot buffer, then stretching it to five at one point, Scheffler suddenly found himself level with Jon Rahm when he reached the turn at Quail Hollow.
The world No.1 offset a first-hole bogey with a birdie at the second hole as his chasers faltered early at the season's second major championship.
But as Scheffler battled an uncooperative driver and dropped further shots at the sixth and ninth holes, Rahm joined the American at nine under despite finding only three greens on the front nine.
After starting the day four shots back, the super Spaniard needed only 12 putts through the first 12 holes, with birdies at No.8 and No.0 drawing Rahm level with Scheffler atop the leaderboard.Â
Scott was in a six-way tie for second at six under before a bogey on the short par-4 14th stalled the former world No.1's charge.
Scott, though, was still very much on track for a 22nd top-10 finish at a major, and within one shot of Harris English's clubhouse lead. With a birdie at the 15th hole, fellow Australian Cam Davis joined Scott at five under late in his final round.
English earlier posted a seven-birdie 65 to storm to six under for the championship.
