You might be amazed at just how simple and rewarding donating blood can be.

It’s so easy but so beneficial, in fact, that Darren Sharman’s done it 252 times.

Celebrating his incredible milestone of 250 donations just in time for National Blood Donor Week, Mr Sharman is a true veteran when it comes to giving blood.

His blood donation journey began in 2007, shortly after he moved to Shepparton, where he has now been living for about 20 years.

"I have been consistent (with donating), every two weeks for that time,“ he said.

There was no big source of inspiration for his efforts, he simply saw a chance to give back and help others, and grasped it with both hands.

“I just think that it’s a great community thing, and I saw the need. I heard about it, and thought ‘I can do that’ and now just keep coming back. It’s so easy.”

Donating also comes with its own perks.

“You get snacks, and you get 30 minutes to relax,” Mr Sharman said.

“Come and do it. It’s so easy.”

Some employers even let you donate during work hours.

Additionally, donating is a great way to ground yourself, and offers a chance to engage with the community and meet new people.

Mr Sharman said he had even made some new friends throughout his years donating.

“The staff especially. They’re all really good people,” he said.

Mr Sharman wasn't alone in celebrating the 250-donation milestone on Tuesday, June 11 at Lifeblood’s Shepparton Donor Centre; several other donors joined him in the waiting room, enjoying snacks and sharing stories.

A guest speaker, a recipient of donated blood, made an appearance, highlighting the value of blood donations and blood products.

“Coming in, we know it (the blood) gets used. There are stories on the walls,” Mr Sharman said.

“But today was good, and hearing it from a recipient was good. It was like magic.

“You get a bit of a rush, and it’s good to feel that good energy.”

Mr Sharman's next official milestone is 275 donations, but his personal goal is to continue donating for as long as he can.
