KDL netball: Lancaster holds on in a thriller

Lancaster has kept its finals hopes alive with a thrilling two-goal win against Violet Town in their Kyabram District League A-grade netball clash.

The round 11 result pushed Lancaster into eighth on the ladder, two wins behind Merrigum, while the Towners are left languishing in 13th.

Lancaster coach Leanna Couston said the crazy weather that hit the region on Saturday made Lancaster’s netball courts resemble ‘‘almost a lake’’.

‘‘It’s always difficult in the wet, especially on a day like Saturday,’’ Couston said.

‘‘We were running in water for the majority of the match, the court had puddles everywhere — it was almost like a lake.

‘‘You can’t play your game and it’s just a different style of netball and you have to use short passes to move down the court.

‘‘I was incredibly happy with how the girls were able to hold on in those conditions.’’

The Wombats have been developing their youth, with Bec Squires playing a strong game in goal attack.

Squires was supported by Zoe Hayes and Rehutai Collyer, with Hayes shutting down the Towners’ wing attack.

The wet weather did not affect Collyer, with the midcourter passing into her side’s attacking end with incredible poise.

Couston said the improvement after 11 rounds of action had been impressive.

‘‘For such a young side, their progress each week just continues to amaze me,’’ she said.

‘‘Bec played outstanding and made some great shots on goal.

‘‘Zoe and Reh were instrumental in the midcourt as well.

‘‘I was incredibly happy with the result.’’

●Across the league, Undera (seventh) kept the pressure on Merrigum (sixth) with a 67-10 win against Ardmona.

Dookie United powered past Merrigum to clinch a 45-31 win.

Nagambie and Stanhope were too strong for Rushworth and Avenel, winning 78-17 and 79-26 respectively.

Tallygaroopna claimed a 36-21 win against Shepparton East, while Girgarre defeated Longwood 28-14.
