Council, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and SES staff managed these studies.
Their purpose was to document the flood impacts and prepare a detailed flood map, as both towns were impacted by flooding in the past, most recently in 2012.
Community engagement was crucial, with residents providing surveys, photos and flood lines from past events.
Councillors Ben Ladson and Dinny Adem commended the efforts of residents of both communities:
“This is really helpful,” Cr Adem said.
“The work of residents helped identify some hotspots.”
Tallygaroopna Flood Scoping Study
Although no houses were known to have flooded above floor level during the 2012 event, the study highlighted low flood risks for the town.
Key recommendations for Tallygaroopna include updating the planning scheme to reflect flood risks, imposing minimum floor levels for new developments and updating emergency and flood management plans.
Additionally, council will collaborate with GBCMA to determine when to open and close the inlet gates on Congupna Creek.
The final report will be released for public consultation to ensure community involvement in future flood mitigation efforts.
Katandra West Flood Scoping Study
Similarly, the Katandra West study focused on documenting flood impacts and preparing flood maps.
The study confirmed that the 2012 flood was the most severe, but no houses flooded above floor level, indicating low flood risks for the town.
The study recommended improving flood mapping for Katandra West and updating relevant emergency and flood management plans.
It did not find a need for further flood studies or significant flood mitigation measures. Council plans to include areas inundated in 2012 in the Land Subject to Inundation Overlay within the planning scheme.
The final report will be released for public consultation, allowing the community to provide feedback and participate in future flood management strategies.
