Western Australia are all but assured of winning their third successive Sheffield Shield after setting Tasmania a near-impossible target of 537 runs at tea on day four of the final.

The Tigers attack toiled valiantly to take seven wickets at the WACA Ground on Sunday, but not before WA's lower order lifted the home side's second-innings to 376.

After Charlie Stobo (13) was castled by a Riley Meredith shooter just after lunch, lower-order pair Charlie Gannon (42) and Joel Paris (26) dug their heels in for much of the middle session.

Beau Webster took a sharp catch in the gully to dismiss Paris before trapping Gannon lbw with his offspin to finish with 3-85.

Iain Carlisle (3-58) was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers.

Earlier, Hilton Cartwright (94) succumbed on the cusp of lunch, padding up to an in-ducker from Webster, who started the day bowling seam.

The hulking Webster had an eventful morning, taking two sharp catches and dropping a sitter, "bowling" Cartwright on 82 with an in-ducker that didn't dislodge the bails, then sending WA's top-scoring No.4 packing in sight of a ninth first-class ton.

Webster began the day with a magnificent, diving left-handed catch at leg slip to dismiss Aaron Hardie (47), as offspinner Jarrod Freeman extracted turn and bounce to break the 107-run fourth-wicket stand.

Gabe Bell struck with the second new ball when Josh Inglis (3) edged an outswinger to Tigers captain Jordan Silk at slip.

Debutant Cooper Connolly was reprieved on two when Webster grassed an easy chance at slip but the Tasmanian made amends when he snared a sharp chance, also at slip, to send young Connolly on his way for 18.
