Looking at the start of summer, December saw total rainfall of 47.2mm.
A wild storm lashed the Goulburn Valley on Christmas Eve, with winds of up to 95km/h recorded at the Shepparton Airport weather station.
The storm toppled trees, left 5000 homes without power and damaged buildings.
In the 24 hours until 9am on Christmas Day, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 19.6mm of rain at Shepparton.
In the 24 hours until 9am on Boxing Day, an additional 16.6mm was recorded at Shepparton.
December also saw the highest night-time minimum temperature of 2023, on December 13, a warm 24.9℃.
January was a record-breaking month for Shepparton weather.
The thunderstorm on January 3 saw 78.4mm of rainfall recorded at Shepparton Airport.
According to the bureau, it was the highest single-day rainfall figure ever recorded in Shepparton in January.
It was also the second-highest daily rainfall total recorded at that station.
“Previous daily rainfall this high at Shepparton Airport was 83mm on November 12, 1998, which is the highest daily rainfall on record,” the BOM climate team said.
“The previous January record was 31mm on January 1, 2003.”
However, that’s not where the record-breaking ends.
“With the 78.4mm on January 3, Shepparton Airport recorded a total of 139.2mm for the month,” BOM said.
“This is [the] highest total rainfall for January at this station, and second highest monthly rainfall total behind 151.6mm recorded in October 2022.”
February was big on temperatures, having both the warmest and coldest days of the season.
February’s warmest day was also summer’s highest daytime temperature of 39℃ on Sunday, February 4, some 6.1℃ warmer than the historical average of 30.9℃.
The coldest daytime maximum temperature was 23.2℃ on Wednesday, February 14, which was also the coldest day of the season.
In terms of night-time temperatures, February was uneventful, matching the historical average night-time temperature of 15℃.
In contrast to the first two months of the season, February was drier than usual, having 22mm of rainfall in total, 11.2mm less than the historical average of 33.2mm.
The highest rainfall in one day for February in Shepparton was on February 21, with 17.6mm recorded.
