Windsor turned heads with two superb goals on the run as the Demons powered to a 38-point victory at Ikon Park on Wednesday night in their final tune-up.
The 18-year-old split duties on a wing with former St Kilda midfielder Jack Billings and is in the frame to be called up in place of Lachie Hunter (calf) in the opening round line-up.
Melbourne start their new campaign against Sydney at the SCG next Thursday night.
"He's really given himself every chance, hasn't he? He's had a terrific pre-season and trained really hard," Demons assistant coach Andrew McQualter said of Eastern Ranges product Windsor, who was taken at pick seven at last year's draft.
"He's a young kid and he's got lots of parts of his game that he'll still get better at, but he's given himself a real look at it."
Windsor drew some comparisons with former Carlton and West Coast champion Chris Judd as he showed off his speed and composure, twice burning off opponents and kicking truly against the Blues.
"We're happy if he does that," McQualter said.
"That's one of his skill sets, for sure, but he's also got a really strong defensive side of his game that is a big focus for him as well.
"He'll be trying to balance that out all year."
Hunter and Charlie Spargo (achilles) are in doubt for Melbourne's opening round encounter with the Swans, while Harrison Petty (toe) and former Adelaide forward Shane McAdam (calf) are also under clouds.
Demons X-factor Kysaiah Pickett is unavailable through suspension.
Tom Sparrow showed he is capable of stepping into the gap left by recently retired utility Angus Brayshaw with a strong midfield showing against Carlton, tallying 20 disposals, seven tackles and three goals.
