Jayasuriya has Afghans in a historic first-Test spin

The visitors are now leading Sri Lanka by just seven runs in the second innings with three wickets in hand. Afghanistan made 198 in their first dig and bowled Sri Lanka out for 439.

Afghanistan started the day only 42 runs adrift of covering the deficit and hoping to build a fighting score, after Ibrahim Zadran and Noor Ali Zadran (47) had shared a century stand - their highest for the first wicket. After Noor Ali's departure, Ibrahim put on an unbeaten 93 runs for the second wicket with Rahmat Shah.

But their inexperience meant that they failed to build on that momentum.

Fast bowler Kasun Rajitha, who was called up as a concussion substitute for Chamika Gunasekara, had the first breakthrough after Sri Lanka took the second new ball.

He had Shah caught behind by Sadeera Samarawickrama for 54. It was Shah's second half-century of the match having top-scored with 91 runs in the fist innings.

Naseer Jamal was not out seven with tailender Naveed Zadran yet to score and Jayasuriya finishing the first session with figures of 4-83.

This is the first Test match between the two countries after Afghanistan were admitted as a Test playing nation in 2018.
