Victorian Public and Active Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams announced that public transport would be free across all metro and regional trains, trams and buses.
“Celebrating with friends and family is incredibly important at this time of year, and providing free travel across the state will make it easier for all Victorians to catch up with loved ones,” Ms Williams said.
“People heading out to celebrate on New Year’s Eve should leave the car at home and catch public transport to their destination — it’s free and the safest way to travel to celebrate the beginning of 2024.”
On Christmas Day, metropolitan and regional public transport will run to a Sunday timetable.
It will be free from 3am Monday, December 25, until 3am Boxing Day, with Boxing Day running on a regular public holiday timetable.
For the new year, passengers can travel free from 6pm Sunday, December 31, until 6am, January 1.
Passengers travelling with a myki will not be required to touch on or off. Passengers travelling on V/Line services will still need to book on reserved services, but they will not be charged.
