I must apologise in advance, if you are short on reading. Although I am definitely on the mend, it is a zig-zagging recovery.
I recently told you how much I enjoy your ‘I remember’ letters.
Here’s one from Judy, which I was pleased to receive on Thursday.
Remembering coming with my father — James McRae Dunn — station master from Cathkin, near Alexandra, to perform on Hospital Sunday in June, I think 1958 or 1957. 3SR ran a program to raise money for the hospitals and also had live entertainers come to perform. My dad had a lovely tenor voice and performed through the war years and was well known in the district, so he was invited to sing; as I was also, to play the piano. I accompanied Dad and also performed Robin’s Return, a piano piece, at the tender age of 13 or 14 years old.
It was quite a big trip in those days, as being one of nine kids we didn’t go anywhere much. We journeyed over in a big 1937 Chevrolet to Shepparton. I can’t remember where the 3SR studio was, but I thought it was in Wyndham St, south of Shepp.
Would love to know if these programs were archived and how I could get a copy of that day.
Regards, Judy Baker
It would be a big trip, Judy; a long day for your dad — I’m supposing he did all the driving! I think 3SR would be in Wyndham St by ’57 — but, if I’m wrong, I know a couple of fellas who will jump on me from a great height. I’m also imagining the joy of escaping from eight siblings for a whole day!
I don’t play the piano, but I get the impression that Robin’s Return was somewhat of a milestone for you and your hard work. I’m sure there are talented people out there who will recognise this achievement for what it is.
And a letter from John and Kay, on Friday.
Hello Marnie — I do hope you are feeling much better, was concerned to read you had some nasty virus!
Thought your last two weeks’ news very good. Loved reading about Suzanna Sheed — although I knew and admired Kym O’Keeffe as mayor, I was sorry Suzanna lost the seat, as she was so effective. She told me she was very tired though — politics is a tough gig, as they say! I worked closely with Peter Eastaugh for many years and we were ‘soul mates’ in respect to caring for families with young children — we both came from RCH and are the same age, although he ribs me that I am older than him — by only eight months!
Am busy every day with Historical Society things but making progress! We installed a Compactus today at H Centre, which will give us much more storage space, and am working on another grant to print a book — a love story about a German PoW in Camp 13 written by his daughter. Watch this space!
Hope this note finds you getting much much better. LOL, Kay
Actually, just now, as I write this I am feeling terrible — but it will be getting better soon. No-one seems too sure about the existence of this new virus, but it would be difficult for three of us to have it if it doesn’t exist. Seven News, which reported recently on it, described it perfectly. But I haven’t heard ‘boo’ about the virus since.
Kay, I can just imagine you sparking off Peter Eastaugh — like a gnat fly — and giving him no hope of overlooking the fact that there is a six-month-old babe in that house.
Now, what else my friend? Oh yes! the H Centres are becoming more high tech, and isn’t that great — easier for everyone. And a new camp book — how truly wonderful. You are a devil for punishment.
That’s all for now and may it be easy, my friends.
Marnie
