The Eagles remain unbeaten at the top of the A-grade table following the round six Kyabram District League encounter at Central Park Recreation Reserve.
It was billed as a match not to miss and it certainly lived up to expectations as the margin stayed under five goals throughout the four quarters.
Maddison Newey was outstanding in goals for the home side as it fought back from a half-time deficit to pencil in a memorable win over the reigning premier and last year’s preliminary final foe Tallygaroopna.
“It’s a great feeling; we haven’t showed much consistency yet across four quarters and we’ve been a bit up-and-down so it was nice that everything came together,” Hueston said.
“Everyone played their role and everything felt like it clicked. We’ll enjoy it and it’s nice to know we can match it with the best, but we won’t get ahead of ourselves.”
Hueston highlighted a decisive call to bring on fresh legs at the main break.
With her side down by four goals, Kali Frost, Jess Beaton and Claire Doherty got given a chance on the court and the Eagles were able to wrestle momentum back their way.
“It was such a close game and it was in the balance for four quarters,” she said.
“They had a slight edge in the first half, but we made some changes at half-time and brought on fresh legs. We started to get a bit of a run on and to the girls’ credit they held on. I thought Maddi played a great game in the goal circle, she shot well and was really important for us.”
Elsewhere, Girgarre continues to knock on the door of the top-four following a statement win over Nagambie.
The Kangaroos have been one of the surprise packets this campaign and continued on their stellar run with a 51-45 win on the road.
Stanhope has strengthened its finals credentials with a 46-44 win over Avenel, while Merrigum breezed past Rushworth by 33 goals.
Undera defeated Murchison-Toolamba by 12 goals as it impresses in 2023 and Violet Town overpowered Longwood by 26 goals.
Lastly, Dookie United sits in second spot unbeaten after six rounds following a superb 25-goal win at home on Sunday over Lancaster.
