Journalist Stan Grant is walking away from his role as host of the ABC's Q&A program, citing exhaustion because of persistent racial abuse.

Not one ABC executive offered public support when a stream of abuse and criticism was aimed at him following his involvement in the public broadcaster's coverage of the King's coronation, the veteran journalist said on Friday.

"I don't hold any individual responsible; this is an institutional failure," Grant said in a column on the ABC News website.

It is not clear how long he will step away for.

The Wiradjuri man said he also wanted no part of social media because he and his family were regularly targeted with abuse.

"People stop me in the street to tell me how vile it is,'' he said.

"They tell me how sorry they are.

"Although I try to shield myself from it, the fact it is out there poisons the air I breathe."
