Border Raiders FC notched an important win over La Trobe University Black in the Central Victorian League 2 Men’s competition.

After conceding to La Trobe’s Red team last week, the Raiders made no mistake against their clubmates, snatching a 2-0 victory thanks to a brace from the returning Samuel Wanesiofa.

The Raiders went into half-time with a 1-0 lead thanks Wandesiofa’s 14th-minute strike before his 62nd-minute goal proved the winner in a tight contest at La Trobe under lights.

Raiders coach Jonathan Keele said while it was not the most polished performance, he was happy to see his side bank its second win of the year.

“It probably wasn’t one of our best performances, we struggled on a pitch that was a bit smaller than what we’re used to,” Keele said.

“We’ve got plenty of leg speed so when we drove the ball forward we were right on the baseline.

“But it was good to get another win on the board and continue on our way.”

Austin Linahan and Rory Van De Zand excelled in the Raiders’ midfield, while the backline stood tall when required, though the majority of possession was held in the Raiders’ half.

“Our backline were solid, Sam came back in for his first game in a month after being overseas and kicked two goals,” Keele said.

The Border Raiders sit fifth on the CVL 2 ladder and will be back in action on May 21 against Shepparton, with a bye scheduled for this weekend’s round six action.

The women’s team had a bye in round five.

Meanwhile, Deniliquin came away with its first win of the season, defeating Golden City Rams 4-2.

A brace to Mark Rourke and Bruce Maunganidze ensured Deni weathered a late charge by City.

Swan Hill threatened to upset ladder leader Golden City FC, but City held firm to record its fourth win of the season, undefeated through five rounds.

Shepparton FC was a 4-0 winner over Shepparton Jaguars in the local derby.
