She acknowledged the controversy around holding the holiday on January 26, but said regardless of when Australia Day was held our multicultural society should be celebrated.
“It’s an opportunity for me to be thankful that I live in Australia and in a wonderful community, with such amazing opportunities offered to me,” she said.
“Today is also a day where we recognise and honour those wonderful people who do so much for our community without expectation of reward or recognition.”
Speeches were also given by state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe and Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, as well as Greater Shepparton City Council Cr Anthony Brophy.
Cindy Dougherty performed quintessentially Australian songs such as Waltzing Matilda, while Des Denane gave a stirring reading of Dorothea MacKellar’s I Love A Sunburnt Country.
Mooroopna Rotary Club ran a free barbecue for all attendees.
