The shelter cares for more than 2000 animals per year including cats, dogs and various livestock including sheep, pigs, horses, poultry and cattle.
SRC co-ordinator Sue Green said the school became aware of the shelter’s need for donations after a staff member donated a box of food.
‘‘We contacted council and they sent me a list of what they needed and for the past five weeks we have encouraged our school community to donate what they could to the cause,’’ Ms Green said.
The SRC Keep Me Warm Campaign committee delivered the sizable donation yesterday.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said it was wonderful to see initiatives taken to help the community.
‘‘It’s great to think that these conversations are being had amongst the teachers, the parents and the children to actually come together and deliver this extraordinary amount of goods,’’ Cr O’Keeffe said.
She said the amount donated was a testament to the school’s generosity.
‘‘We’re very grateful and we can only hope others will continue to donate because any donation can help provide for the number of animals that come through the shelter each year,’’ Cr O’Keeffe said.
The Shepparton Animal Shelter is at 125 Wanganui Rd, Shepparton.
