Finishing out the year with unprecedented flooding has challenged so many people right across Murray and for many, the impacts will be felt well into the new year and beyond.
Our farmers have watched a bumper season disappear under flood water while also losing the potential to plant summer crops including rice.
I have travelled to many flood affected communities over the last few months, and I have been heartened by the community spirit which is still very much alive in times of crisis.
I have heard so many inspiring stories of people helping others.
Of small towns pulling together and sandbagging houses and infrastructure for family, friends and neighbours.
Of amazing livestock rescues, excavators working 24/7 and a generosity of spirit that has been truly amazing.
I left the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party at the start of 2022 after they refused to support a disallowance of a floodplain harvesting regulation in northern NSW and I now stand as an Independent, in the seat of Murray.
It has been a rewarding year and much has happened.
From a political perspective, highlights have included the announcement of bulk billing of the radiotherapy unit at Griffith Hospital - patients will no longer face out of pocket expenses for radiation treatment.
Another great win was an amendment I made to a piece of integrity legislation which now means NSW MPs have to declare any water interests on the pecuniary interest form – this is one step closer to transparency and accountability in politics.
I have put my hand up in support of much needed gambling reform across NSW which has attracted the wrath of ClubsNSW - who for some reason have decided to target only me in a smear campaign, despite the reform being instigated by the coalition government and supported by other political parties and Independents.
Politics is never easy, but I will continue to represent the people of Murray to the best of my ability.
In 2023 I will continue to push for a transparent water register and independent funding of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).
Have a safe and Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
