Following more than a month of closure, Watt Rd bridge between Kialla and Mooroopna will open from 7am on Monday, December 5 to vehicles under three tonnes.
Raftery Rd bridge reopened at 3pm on Friday, December 2, while the Toolamba bridge is still in the process of being cleaned and assessed, it’s estimated to reopen late next week.
The reopening of Watt Rd comes after heavy traffic delays were felt by the community due to works at the intersection of Welsford and Fryers Sts.
Greater Shepparton City Council staff and bridge engineers have inspected the structural integrity of the bridge and surrounding road following floodwaters subsiding and roads have been repaired where necessary.
Though Greater Shepparton City Council infrastructure director Gary Randhawa said under no circumstances should vehicles three tonne and over attempt to cross over the bridge.
“The bridge has been assessed as safe for vehicles under three tonne and we ask that drivers are considerate and think about their own safety plus that of other bridge users,” Mr Randhawa said.
“In the past, despite the signage and height restrictions, heavy vehicles have used the bridge and caused damage to the infrastructure which means closing the bridge for repairs.
“We do not want to be in that situation with Watt Rd carrying around 5500 vehicles a day.”
