The 26-year-old Auburn woman was in the bedroom of her apartment on Friday night, when a man she did not know came into the room with a meat cleaver, detectives from the NSW Police sex crimes squad said Monday.
"The man then allegedly threatened the woman and sexually assaulted her, before leaving the unit," NSW Police said.
The woman later went to Auburn Police Station where local police began investigating. Strike Force Cinnibar was then established with State Crime Command Sex Crime Squad detectives and officers from the South West Metropolitan Region.
Detectives on Monday morning arrested a 37-year-old man at Silverwater prison, where was in custody on another matter.
He was charged with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, including two counts of threatening to inflict harm with a weapon, sexually touching another person without consent, and one count of aggravated break and enter to commit serious indictable offence.
He was refused bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on Tuesday.
