Svarc’s big AFLW Grand Final weekend

It was a big weekend for Corowa’s own Svarc sisters with Cathy Svarc being part of the winning Brisbane Lions AFLW Grand Final team and Ruby Svarc winning the AFLW Grand Final Sprint.

The sisters are both locally well known for their stellar A Grade netball careers playing for Corowa-Rutherglen. They last played together in 2014 before Cathy moved to Geelong for her physiotherapy career and Ruby moved to Melbourne to study nutrition and dietetics.

In February last year Cathy made her debut in the Lions’ round 1 game against Adelaide at Hickey Park. Unfortunately, her season was cut short with the coronavirus pandemic halting sports across the country.

Ruby, aged 27 and is 161cm tall, was picked by Brisbane in the 2020 AFLW draft in October, joining her sister Cathy for the 2021 season. While she hasn’t debuted, she has shown plenty of improvement and potential over the last few months.

Cathy, who stands 165cm tall and is now 29 years of age, played an integral part in the Lions stunning win over the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Park on Sunday securing the club’s first premiership.

Cathy racked up 12 possessions (five kicks and seven handballs) and laid an impressive seven tackles. Cathy has been referred to as one of the premier defensive midfielders of the AFLW competition with a “huge aerobic capacity”.  Cathy, now a premiership player, will look forward to adding to her 18 AFLW games in 2022 and hope to play alongside her sister.
