Haisman Shield | Top spot up for grabs between Mooroopna and Lakers

By Aydin Payne

Top spot on the Cricket Shepparton Haisman Shield ladder will be up for grabs tomorrow when Nagambie begins its run chase against Mooroopna.

The Cats posted 242 runs off 77 overs on the opening day of the round six encounter at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve, which leaves Nagambie needing to record its biggest score of the season to claim victory.

Following Katandra's shock first innings loss to Shepparton United last week and Numurkah having the bye, the winner of tomorrow's match can push to the lead on the ladder.

Nagambie can move to outright first with a win, while the home side can enjoy a share of top spot with Numurkah.

Spectators at tomorrow's match are sure to be enthralled by the battle between bat and ball, with the competition's leading run-scorer and leading bowler set to duke it out.

Mark Nolan is in phenomenal touch, with the Lakers skipper scoring 279 runs since his seven-run knock in round one and averages 95.3.

His brother Luke is enjoying playing at his old club, with the wicketkeeper averaging 41.2 with the bat from five knocks.

The reigning Lightfoot medallist and his brother have scored more than half of Nagambie's runs this season — combining for 492 runs.

But they face a stern test against one of the Haisman Shield's newest stars.

Mooroopna's Henry Barrow has roared onto the scene with his ferocious pace bowling, with the English import racking up 13 wickets from five matches at an average of 8.31.

And the Cats’ bowling and fielding has sharply improved this season, with the fourth-ranked side only conceding 550 runs against from four matches.

The last time these two sides played, Mooroopna defeated the Lakers after restricting them to 163 runs at the same venue.

However, the Cats’ win was on the back of a standout performance from former import Roman Walker (4-35) and (60 not out).
