Shepparton police Senior Constable Sam McCallum said police were called to a residential address in Wright Ave about 2 pm.
“There’s been a family violence incident between two males and one’s been assaulted,” he said.
The 19-year-old victim was transported to Goulburn Valley Health with a number of stab wounds.
“He has been taken to Goulburn Valley Health in a serious condition with upper and lower body injuries,” an Ambulance media spokesperson said.
Following the incident, police taped off the area surrounding the house where they remained for a number of hours speaking to witnesses and neighbours.
Police confirmed a 44-year-old Shepparton man was arrested at the scene and was assisting police with their inquiries.
Sen Constable McCallum could not confirm the relationship of the man and the victim or how many people were inside the home at the time of the stabbing.
A family friend of the teenager, who asked not to be named, said he was called to the scene yesterday by the victim’s mother.
“He was a lovely boy who had finished Year 12, he was studying with my son at TAFE ... we would see each other every week we are a family friends,” the man said.
He said the family was in shock.
“We are all very upset and sad about what’s happened,” the man said.
“We need to talk more about family violence and get educated, it is very important to prevent it in the future.”
A spokesperson at GV Health said the boy was in a stable condition last night, but was unable to comment on the extent of his injuries or whether he would be undergoing surgery.
Sen Constable McCallum said the investigation was ongoing.
“Police are still appealing for witnesses at this point so if anyone has any information they can contact the Shepparton police station on 5820 5777 or Crime Stoppers,” he said.
