The Goulburn River depends on environmental flows.
Reduced environmental flows in the Goulburn will lead to further damaging impacts on the river and dependant wetlands.
Loch Garry, Reedy and Gemmill swamps and a myriad other wetlands rely on over-bank flows to maintain their health.
This connectivity of nutrient and carbon cycles is the key to a healthy riverine ecosystem and, ultimately, the future of the Goulburn River and our regional economy.
The Murray-Darling Basin Plan is not just about distant downstream environmental benefits, it’s also about the survival of our Goulburn River.

I noted with interest the front page Shepparton News article (November 4) describing the chaos drivers faced every day trying to navigate the confusing Benalla Rd roundabout. I noted also the assurances that the VicRoads spokesperson gave that all the problems and confusion would be fixed in ‘‘a few weeks’’ time.
Well it has now been a few weeks, VicRoads, and no discernible safety improvements have been made at the roundabout, nor has any measure been taken to slow down the speed of semi-trailers that hurtle straight through this roundabout 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
To alleviate the concerns of many Shepparton people who are experiencing these safety worries, perhaps VicRoads could provide a copy of the ‘‘safety audit’’ that no doubt was completed prior to the opening of the roundabout, before someone gets seriously hurt.
