Charles Darwin University joins the wider Northern Territory community in mourning the passing of Dr Annette Burke JP, a deeply respected Territorian and cherished member of the CDU community.

A proud CDU alumna, Annette was committed to education throughout her life. Her leadership as Chair of the CDU Foundation made a significant and lasting contribution to the University and the broader Territory. In recognition of her outstanding service, she was made a Companion of the University in 2016 and later awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 2026.

Beyond CDU, Annette’s legacy is reflected in her exceptional service as the longest-serving Mayor of Palmerston and through her leadership in health, education, and community organisations. Her distinguished career included major contributions to public policy, education, and community leadership locally, nationally, and internationally.

Annette’s generosity and dedication embodied the values that underpin CDU’s mission to serve and strengthen the Northern Territory. Her warmth, generosity, and dedication touched many lives.

On behalf of Charles Darwin University, we extend our sincere condolences to her husband Denis, her sons Sam and Tom, daughters-in-law Lia and Mariya, her family, and all who knew and admired her.
