Tongala drops battle of Blues

Kyle Fitzgerald’s Tongala dropped its first game of the season against fellow Blues Numurkah.

A toothless first half has denied Tongala a 2-0 start in the Murray Football League, the senior side taken down by Numurkah in round two.

In the all-Blues derby, Tonny was on the road at Numurkah Showgrounds, but showed some tentativeness in away territory, failing to fire in the first half.

It was a low-scoring arm-wrestle in the first period, but Numurkah found the centre sticks twice to post 12 points, while Tongala could only register three minor scores.

The host took full control in the second, booting four more majors to lead by as many as 34, before Tongala finally got on the board late in the period to trail 39-11 at the half.

Tonny started to find its feet in the third, kicking four goals to two, but Numurkah wrung the life out of the game in the fourth to inch home 9.6 (60) to 5.11 (41).

Tom Holman shouldered the Tongala scoring load with four majors, while coach Jordan Souter praised the efforts of his backline, with Cameron Illet and Beau Joyce leading the best on honours.

Now 1-1, Tongala slips into the mid-table, with rapid movement up and down the table still on the cards in the young season.

The side hosts an improving Echuca United in round three, at Tongala Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
