Old Students have taken the initiative on that front, announcing star all-rounder Kepler Lukies as a 2026-27 recruit.
The Victorian under-19 and Katamatite star will call Kialla Park home after a season in Victorian Premier Cricket with Fitzroy-Doncaster, with Old Students coach Vince Gagliardi referencing Lukies’ reliability when pursuing the star spinner and Phillipines representative.
“He could bowl lots of overs and has the ability to contain [batters] or get wickets,” Gagliardi said.
“He can come on early in an innings or during the middle order, we know that we can slow down the scoring rate or get a wicket.
“I also rate his batting and we think that he can add some value there.”
The Students finished ninth and two games out of finals in a turn Gagliardi admitted was disappointing.
But with the Haisman Shield core mostly retained, he’s confident the side can turn around their fortunes.
“It's pretty much retention so far, everyone's sort of staying on board,” he said.
“We've got some strong young talent now at the club.”
Around the league, club champions have been crowned as the final order of business, presentation nights, are carried out.
Lightfoot Medallist Ragu Aravinthan took out Numurkah’s John Thompson and Russell Baldi medals as best-and-fairest and champion player, while Mooroopna’s Luscombe Medallist for 2025-26 was Mark Nolen.
Steve Tate took out SYCU’s club champion award.
