Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club boasts plenty of star regional talent - but now it’s got an export going international.
Shepparton’s Thomas Ranson has earned a scholarship to American college Sacramento State, a university in National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) division one.
It’s been an opportunity Ranson has worked on achieving for years, and one his first coach and Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club stalwart Luke Dixon has followed closely.
Since then, Ranson continued his dedication to tennis in Melbourne, boarding at Caulfield Grammar to access higher quality opportunities to challenge his skill set.
Ranson spoke with several collegiate programs during the recruitment process, but built a strong connection with Mikus Losbergs, Sacramento State head coach, his final choice of preference and ultimate accepting university.
Ranson’s ace chapter in the Big West Conference will serve up in August when he flies to the United States.
Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club congratulated Ranson’s achievement on social media, listing the lengths the 19-year-old has gone to to reach the next stage of his burgeoning tennis career.
“Reaching a high level in tennis takes dedication, discipline and years of consistent effort, and Thomas is a great example of what’s possible,” the post read.
“Thomas started right here at our club, learning the game, developing his skills, and being supported by senior local players and his first coach Luke Dixon.
“At just 15, Thomas made the move to boarding school in Melbourne to access stronger training and competition opportunities.
“Balancing school and sport required organisation, commitment and a clear focus on his goals.
“Training up to six days a week, his journey has included: Private lessons, multiple squad sessions, extensive match play, strength and conditioning to stay fit and healthy and building a strong and resilient mindset.
“Just as important has been the unwavering support of his family. Paul, Karen and Zach have shown tremendous commitment throughout Thomas’ tennis journey, making countless sacrifices and providing encouragement every step of the way.
“From training sessions and tournaments to travel and the everyday demands of pursuing high level tennis, their support over many years has played a vital role in helping Thomas achieve his goals."
