Shepparton’s Liam Broom is flourishing as a senior Goulburn Valley Football League ruckman, all at just 17 years of age.
But it’s not difficult to see where Broom’s progress has come from, as he learns from one of the GVL’s best to tap the Sherrin, Ash Holland.
The 200-plus gamer at the Bears is mentoring Broom as the young giant develops into the ruckman of Shepparton’s future, and over the course of July, the fruits of the pair’s labour paid off to its full height.
Named in the best against Shepparton United in round 13, and kicking a goal in the round 14 two-point win over Mooroopna, Broom’s senior football in July was game-breaking.
It adds onto a first full year of seniors that has been prolific, Broom kicking 14 goals from 14 appearances and notching three listings in the Bears’ best.
After a few months against the bulked up bodies of men’s football, Broom would take full advantage of returning to under-age qualifications too, dominating in the ruck during the Goulburn Valley League’s under-19s interleague match against the VAFA on July 11, winning best on ground honours for the purple and gold.
Broom recorded a game-high 43 hit outs in the representative contest, plus 16 disposals, six clearances and 117 ranking points.
In a strong campaign for his time spent in maroon and gold, Broom averages 12.5 disposals, a goal, 4.8 score involvements and 83.4 ranking points per game.
Following a flag in the thirds a tick over 10 months ago, Broom is aiding Shepparton’s climb towards its first senior flag since 2018, and should surely be a top name for consideration by the time the last dance in September arrives, if the Bears reach the grand occasion.
If anything, the Bears can rest easy knowing they are blessed to one day replace the GVL’s premier ruckman Holland with another touted star, who undoubtedly will sweep up the role seamlessly.
