The idea for the ‘On Sundays We Walk’ initiative came from Shepparton’s Bryony Large, who moved to the Goulburn Valley two years ago and says one conversation has continued to come up among women she meets: making new friendships as an adult can be surprisingly difficult.
“I’ve met so many incredible women since moving to the region, but I keep hearing the same thing — it can be bloody hard to make new girlfriends as an adult. Dare I say, especially in a regional town,” Miss Large said.
“I’ve had the idea sitting in my notes app since February, and all the conversations happening online among women recently gave me the push to stop overthinking it and just give it a go.”
The concept is intentionally simple: women can turn up, go for a walk around Victoria Park Lake, have a chat and hopefully meet someone new.
The walk is open to women of all ages, including those who are new to the region, whose social circles have changed, who are looking for new walking companions, or who simply want to meet more women locally.
“There’s no networking, no membership and no pressure to know anyone beforehand,” Miss Large said.
“Come alone, bring a friend, bring a pet, know nobody — all are welcome.”
The first On Sundays We Walk event will take place at Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton, on Sunday, October 11 at 9.30am.
Miss Large said she would see how the first event went, but aimed to make it a monthly get-together for women in the future.
The event is free to attend.
