Goulburn Valley Hockey Association hosted its senior deciders at the weekend, and though the women’s clash had some degree of competitiveness and the B-grade men’s game was as close as they come, the same couldn’t be said for the A-grade men’s final.
Simply put, Strikers took Echuca-Moama to the cleaners.
Xavier McBain’s charges thumped the River Rats 10-0 in a completely one-sided affair, with Timothy Russell’s hat-trick and Danny Ballinger’s brace putting their names up in lights.
Other Strikers’ scores were Sam Holland, Adrian Abrahams, Gurbaj Singh, Max Cole and McBain.
It adds another layer of lacquer to Strikers’ gilded dynasty, with the club setting its sights on 10 consecutive flags after ticking off number eight on the spin at the weekend.
However, Echuca-Moama Green was able to get its own back in the women’s grand final.
The River Rats squared off with Shepparton Youth Club in the early afternoon fixture, and after proving all season they were the team to beat, ran away with a 3-0 victory over the Scorchers.
Jess Crisp, Sally Thompson and Courtney Thompson each hit the back of the net for Echuca-Moama Green.
Though the afternoon matches weren’t blockbuster spectacles for the neutral, the morning’s tie was true box office hockey and lived up to grand final status.
Strikers and SYC played out a 1-1 draw, sending the game to penalties, where the former would stand tall and lift the cup following a 5-3 shootout victory.
