On Saturday, the Talent League’s round 13 hit-out for the under-18 girls and boys saw the Bushrangers and Benidgo Pioneers go head-to-head for the second time this season, with both sides brimming with local prospects.
While it was defeat for the Bushies boys, 13.9 (87) to 19.10 (124), Mooroopna’s Mac Calleja (16 disposals and five marks), Shepparton’s Archer Hueston (three goals, two behinds and 12 disposals) and Tatura’s Patrick McCarthy (11 disposals and four marks) felt right at home at Mercury Drive and earned spots in the best.
Jamaron Atkinson was another solid contributor, playing on his actual home turf at his community club Rumba, while Jack Mellington, Alex Whitlock, Angus Williams, Lincoln Brand and Hunter Howells represented the Bears and Blake Sofra and Lucas O’Hara flew the flag for United.
In the girls match, the Bushies recorded their fourth win for the year in an 86-point trouncing of the Pioneers.
A seven-goal first term set the tone for the 15.10 (100) to 2.2 (14) victory, as Shepparton United’s Leila Creevey (17 disposals, four tackles) produced one of her best performances of the season.
Demons Lana Carroll and Ashanti Walker and Shepparton Swan Eve Cook also made a feature at Rumbalara on Saturday afternoon.
