Taking on fellow lower-table prospect Rennie, the Timbercutters managed to keep the game in doubt until the final quarter, when the Grasshoppers burst clear to seal the win.
Mathoura was a slow starter on its home patch in the first quarter, only finding a minor score, while Rennie put on 3.2 (20).
The game looked to be getting out of hand in a way all too familiar way for the Cutters as Rennie pushed the lead to 28 at half, although Mathoura was able to build some confidence with its first two majors of the game.
The third quarter marked the first time in 2025 Mathoura came out ahead in a period, the Timbercutters slotting three majors to one from the Hoppers as they got back to within 17 points, 5.4 (34) to 7.9 (51), at the final change.
However, it wasn’t to be for Mathoura, Rennie doubling its efforts in the final period and the host unable to maintain its intensity.
The Grasshoppers would run away with the match 10.14 (74) to 5.6 (36), but there was plenty to take from the game for the still winless Cutters.
Jake Rawe found two goals for Mathoura, while Jack Pell, Mitch Worsnop and Nicolai Henery also kicked majors.
Rennie was led by three from Chase Strawhorn.
Mathoura has a long regroup period before what looks its best chance at putting a win on the board against remaining winless side Blighty.
The Cutters have the bye this weekend before a general league bye on July 12, meaning the side won’t take on the Redeyes until July 19.
