And Benalla has its own up-and-coming ‘Axe Person’ winning competition locally and nationally.
Bently Saunders has recently returned from competing at the Royal Brisbane Show, where he won the Junior Axe Person Under-13 category.
“We did a lot of holidaying up there, but a lot of chopping too,” he said.
“I made it into the final of the under 18s, but didn’t place.”
With a bit of momentum behind him, Saunders is on his way to Adelaide in the coming weeks to represent Victoria at it’s Royal Show.
Bently started in the sport when his dad encouraged him to give it a go about three years ago.
“I put a little axe together,” he said.
“Dad put me on a block and told me how to hit it.”
Since then, Bently has been competing at a local level, which is how he qualified to represent Victoria.
He said he’d had a great time in Brisbane and looks forward to doing it again in Adelaide.
“I had fun, and even made a new friend, Kiowa, up there.
“I can’t wait to get to Adelaide.”
