Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Andrew Costello said police spotted the stolen white Haval Jolion SUV in McLennan St, Mooroopna, about 11am.
Police attempted to intercept it at the intersection of McLennan St and Echuca Rd, but it took off fast.
Police then lost sight of it, but spotted it again in Kilpatrick Ave in Shepparton, as it allegedly drove across lanes of traffic on to Numurkah Rd, nearly colliding with several vehicles at 11.10am, Act Sgt Costello said.
The SUV was then driven fast down Graham St, past Goulburn Valley Health and out of sight of police.
At 1.30pm, police found the vehicle abandoned on Doyles Rd, just south of the Old Dookie Rd roundabout.
Police believe the occupant would have gotten into a second vehicle in this area.
The vehicle had been stolen from the Melbourne suburb of Tarneit on Tuesday, August 12, and police believe it will have been in the Shepparton area from that same day.
Act Sgt Costello said police were aware of at least three residents whose lives were allegedly put at risk by the driving — including two road workers in Graham St and the occupant of a car in Numurkah Rd.
Police area appealing for any witnesses to the dangerous driving, anyone who has dashcam footage of the incidents, as well as anyone who has seen the vehicle in Shepparton from Tuesday onwards, to contact Detective Senior Constable Sarah Roberts at Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit on 5820 5777 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestoppersvic.com.au
