Police data shows a pattern of increased family violence during peak holiday periods, including long weekends when there are major sporting events.
There was a total of 796 family violence incidents reported during the three-day AFL Grand Final long weekend last year, up from 729 incidents the year before.
“We will always respond to keep victims safe,” Family Violence Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Sharon McKinnon said.
"When families get together to enjoy holidays, perpetrators may use these periods of extended contact to increase their abusive behaviours.“
Police say they will continue to work through peak holiday periods, providing safety to the community, with the Christmas, New Year and Easter periods the most prevalent times for family violence offending.
“There is never an excuse for family violence, and police will ensure that each crime is investigated and that all offenders are held to account,” Ms McKinnon said.
“If you are committing any form of family violence, you need to seek help immediately from support services to change your behaviour.”
If you are experiencing family violence or believe someone you know is at risk, seek help from police or a support service.
