Shepparton police Sergeant Shaun-Maree Brock said officers received reports from the public of a car being driven erratically on Watt Rd between Kialla and Mooroopna on Friday, February 20.
She said the Ford Falcon, which was travelling towards Mooroopna, was allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road at a fast speed.
The rear tyre on the Falcon disintegrated while the car was being driven, Sgt Brock said.
When the Falcon came to cars banked up waiting for the traffic lights to change just before crossing the bridge over the Goulburn River into Mooroopna, it had nowhere to go and collided with the back of a caravan that was stopped at the lights at about 11.50am.
Sgt Brock said police were told the man driving the Falcon then got out of his car and swam across the river to get away.
Police attended, and Watt Rd was closed for about 30 minutes while the scene was cleared.
The man was not picked up by police and investigations into the crash are continuing.
No-one was injured in the crash.
Police are asking anyone who saw the brown Ford Falcon driving erratically earlier in the day to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au
