Police allege the stolen red 1997 Nissan Maxima was involved in a petrol drive-off from the BP service station on the corner of Echuca Rd and O’Brien St about 1.07pm.
The car pulled out of the service station and on to the road where police say it was involved in a collision with a truck that was “going relatively slowly”.
The driver, the sole occupant of the Nissan, got out of the car and ran off down Echuca Rd after the crash, police said.
According to police, the man had “a bloody head and a limp”.
Police believe he was jumping fences in the Echuca Rd area as he tried to get away.
Police searched the area, and the police helicopter was brought in for about 20 minutes at about 1.50pm to help in the search, but the driver was not found.
The car had been stolen from Regent St in Shepparton overnight on Saturday, July 26, and police said the owner reported to police that they still had their two sets of keys in their possession.
As of Monday lunchtime, the driver of the car had still not been found by police, with investigations into the incident continuing.
Anyone who saw the incident or who lives in Echuca Rd and saw a man with a bloody head jumping fences or who has CCTV of him, is asked to contact Detective Senior Constable Anthony De Cicco or First Constable Bradley White at Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit on 5820 5777 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestoppersvic.com.au
