National Sorry Day is a significant occasion to remember the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly taken away from their families, cultures and communities.
Organisers say the event, to be held on Tuesday, May 26, from 10.15am to 11.15am at Monash Park, will provide a supportive, respectful and welcoming environment.
“We want to acknowledge that this actually happened,” event host Dierdre Robertson said.
“On Yorta Yorta country, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a long, proud tradition of activism.
“They have always put their hands out to walk with non-Aboriginal people, and we want to recognise that.”
The commemoration will include a Welcome to Country smoking ceremony, guest speaker readings, flag raising, laying of wreaths and a special performance by the Notre Dame Ulama Winyarr dancers.
The commemoration is free for anyone to attend, and is supported by various organisations and local schools.
For those unable to attend in person, the event will be livestreamed at Facebook.com/RespectSRRG
