Shepparton residents are being encouraged to support Share the Dignity’s August Dignity Drive by donating period products at local drop-off points, including all three Shepparton Woolworths stores, Mooroopna Woolworths, and both Shepparton Ampol service stations.
Running from August 1 to 31, the nationwide campaign urges shoppers to donate unopened packets of tampons, pads, period underwear or reusable products to help end period poverty.
According to Share the Dignity’s 2024 Bloody Big Survey, one in five women, girls and people who menstruate have experienced period poverty — the lack of access to basic menstrual products.
Founder and managing director Rochelle Courtenay said addressing the issue required support from all Australians.
“Menstruation is not a choice, and no-one should have to choose between buying period products or buying essential items to get by,” Ms Courtenay said.
In a bold move to bring more allies into the conversation, the charity has launched Bro in the Know, a campaign calling on men to stand beside those who menstruate and help break the stigma.
“No male has to ever think about taking toilet paper to work or to a sporting event, so why should anyone have to worry about having access to tampons?” board director Shayne Gilbert said.
Male advocates are already stepping up, with four former Brisbane Grammar School students now serving on the organisation’s board.
