“I lost a family member to suicide 19 years ago and there wasn’t any regional support so I volunteered for Lifeline and eventually started We Listen,” founder Steve Neff said.
“We focus on the life lived, the person, we say their name and remember the good times.
“We can’t change what happened but let’s keep their memory alive and with us.”
The confidential support groups welcome anyone who has been affected by suicide.
Mr Neff estimates the group has helped 600 people over the past three years and has been generously supported by businesses such as Alinta Energy, Tobin Brothers Funerals, Shepparton Club and Future Recycling.
Mr Neff said he was thankful for the beautiful community that had supported the work of We Listen and was keen to see the organisation grow.
We Listen has received support from state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe and Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, who have both attended walks hosted by We Listen.
The first trivia night will be on Tuesday, May 5 at the Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club in Kialla at 6pm, with many prizes up for grabs.
Entry is a $10 donation and drinks will be available at bar prices.
