Around 35 volunteers were thanked for supporting learner drivers to gain their driving hours and improve road safety over the past year at the May 20 event.
Five-, 10- and 15-year recognition of services awards were presented to Graeme Oakes, Hannah Bowen and Sev Duhring, respectively.
“They were awarded to recognise not just service, but the difference volunteers make in building confidence and safe driving behaviours in learners,” L2P co-ordinator David Bajada said.
Retired Victoria Police Highway Patrol member of 25 years and drive school owner of four years Craig Brauman and former L2P learner driver Safa Zahir were guest speakers on the night.
They expressed gratitude to volunteers and explained how the program positively impacted young learners with the opportunities it provided, which would not be available without the support of volunteers.
“Craig shared insights from experience in road safety and driver education, including a background in policing and professional driving instruction,” Mr Bajada said.
“The talk focused on real-world driving expectations and the importance of consistent mentoring for learners.”
Safa, who is now a probationary driver and a youth advisor and youth community engagement officer in the Goulburn Valley, spoke of the impact the program had on his family life, work and schooling.
He also thanked his mentor, Mr Duhring, and presented him with an appreciation certificate from state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe.
“The most important part of the event was recognising the value of all the L2P volunteers and the role they play in helping young and disadvantaged learners gain independence through driving,” Mr Bajada said.
“It also helped strengthen the connection between volunteers, staff and the broader community.”
He said the program “simply wouldn’t run without volunteers”, and that there was always a need for new volunteers as demand continued to grow.
“Anyone interested in getting involved would be warmly welcomed,” Mr Bajada said.
