Across from sizzling oil and whirring coffee machines, the brick walls of Obertor host a collection of vintage posters, photos and newspaper clippings that showcase the people and places linked to what used to be Fryers Street Food Store.

Located at 53-55 Fryers St, the restaurant is a cosy place to enjoy European style food with a backdrop of smooth music in the heart of Shepparton.
Current owner Aline Davies first came to Australia in 2010 and fell in love with a ‘Shepp boy’ in Swan Hill.
She has since made a life in Shepparton and enjoys having her children visit her in the restaurant.
Owner Aline Davies loves working with Goulburn Valley produce.

Ms Davies took over the establishment two years ago and felt that the restaurant had an outdated perception and needed a rebranding, so she revamped the location and has given it a name that reflects its history.
The name Obertor means ‘upper gate’ and refers to the entry gates found in many old towns in Alsace, France, including in Erstein, the town Ms Davies is originally from.
A picture of the Obertor in Erstein hangs on the wall, connecting this restaurant in Shepparton to a small town in north-east France.
‘Tor’ was also the nickname of her late father-in-law, Chris Davies, and so the name also evokes the idea that he is watching down over the restaurant and the Davies family.
Ms Davies said Obertor had a focus on local produce, such as figs from Pine Lodge.
“There’s so much on offer in the Goulburn Valley,” she said.
Other local suppliers include Boris’s Fruit Shed, Radevski Coolstores and Dimit’s Orchard.
Ms Davies wants Obertor to feel like home for Shepparton’s community and said that many people were “too much on the go and don’t take the time to enjoy the beautiful things in life”.
“France is home, Shepparton is a home away from home,” she said.
Ms Davies is planning to introduce wine tastings that will pair with the local flavours highlighted in Obertor’s menu.
Obertor is open from 9am to 9pm Wednesdays to Fridays, 8am to 9pm on Saturdays and 8am to 3pm on Sundays.
Obertor is located at 53-55 Fryers St.
