These are the blood and plasma donors who are among Australia’s half a million donors being recognised this National Blood Donor Week for their lifesaving efforts.
National Blood Donor Week, which runs from June 12 to 18, is celebrated by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood each year.
The week provides an opportunity to thank the nation’s blood and plasma donors for their 1.6 million life-saving donations and highlights the ongoing need for more people to become donors.
Darren Sharman is one of those being thanked, having made 240 donations of plasma/whole blood, which have helped save the lives of up to 720 patients.
As part of National Blood Donor Week, Lifeblood has teamed up with Australian-based illustration brand Min Pin to create a limited-edition bandage, which will be exclusive to the week.
Lifeblood spokesperson Shae Burns said this month’s bandage was a colourful flock of birds flying high together, which was symbolic of the community of blood and plasma donors.
“Birds of a feather save lives together, and we’re calling on everyone to join our flock of lifesavers this National Blood Donor Week and receive a new limited edition Min Pin bandage,” Ms Burns said.
“With one in three of us needing blood or blood products in our lifetime, donors like Darren Sharman can’t do it alone.
“Shepparton Donor Centre needs 120 additional donors to join their ranks over the next two weeks.
“We want to say a huge thank you to all of our donors who made a difference, and to ask others to make a change for life by becoming a blood donor.”
