This year’s theme is ‘Landcare Is For Everyone’, highlighting the many individuals, groups and organisations involved in Landcare activities, as well as the diversity of projects they’re involved in.
In the national Landcare survey, the most common benefit reported by Landcare volunteers was feeling more connected to nature in their local area (87 per cent).
Close behind, 79 per cent said they have built stronger social connections within their community through volunteering.
The Federal Government supported Landcare Australia Limited and the National Landcare Network Limited with $14.5 million to manage Australia’s natural resources and promote the uptake of sustainable agricultural practices and environmental protection.
The Landcare initiative started in Winjallok, near St Arnaud, in 1986.
Landcare went on to become a national movement in 1989, established by former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, with the advocacy of Philip Toyne from the Australian Conservation Foundation and Rick Farley from the National Farmers’ Federation.
Landcare now has a network of 6000 community groups with more than 160,000 volunteers across Australia.
“Landcare will continue to be crucial in supporting our shift to a more sustainable future by protecting our natural resources,” Federal Environment and Water Minister Murray Watt said.
“This year’s theme reminds us that anyone can make a difference in their local community and help protect our precious environment.”
Landcare Week 2025 began on Monday, August 4 and will finish on Sunday, August 10.
