No birthday party is complete without a cake, but they’re usually made for the human guests.

Why should the humans have all the fun — and treats — though?

Shepparton’s The Pet Food Shop has been in business for a year now, and this weekend will celebrate the milestone.

Store manager Kylie Higgins said the shop had grown “busier and busier” during its first 12 months, catering mainly to the most common household pets, cats and dogs.

But, as evidenced by a customer who arrived to buy live crickets for a pet frog’s dinner during that conversation, also to the Goulburn Valley’s more unique pets.

“We love helping dogs stay healthy and educating their owners on more fresh, holistic feeding; whole foods, fresh meats,” Mrs Higgins said.

“As with humans, they also need not to have too many carbohydrates and sugars in their foods.”

It’s clear the animal lover is passionate about making sure our four-legged friends live their best, healthiest lives, and she wants to enhance them even further by extending a party invitation to them and their owners for a bunch of fun this weekend.

Aside from the birthday cake for canine consumption, there will be a coffee van for humans, giveaways, 20 per cent off the shop’s house brand of treats, and show bags for the dogs in attendance.

There will even be party hats for pets, which are sure to make great props inside the 3D photo booth there on the day, and from which guests will be able to email their captured videos to themselves.

Mrs Higgins said that anyone who spends over $100 during the party will get an entry into a raffle to win a hamper full of goods from the shop.

The celebrations will take place during the shop’s Saturday trading hours, 10am to 2pm, at 41 Archer St (SPC end).
