For the past month, the Victorian Government’s anti-price gouging laws have been in effect, requiring fuel retailers to set a daily cap on their fuel prices and publish it in advance.
Retailers have until 2pm to set their fuel price for the following day, which is then published on Servo Saver at 4pm.
The price will apply for 24 hours from 6am the following day.
Retailers are permitted to reduce their prices during the 24-hour period, but not to increase it.
Under this scheme, consumers can find the best deal at night and be confident the price won’t jump the following day.
“How often do you see a cheap price in the morning, only for it to jump by the afternoon?” Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said.
“We’re stopping families from getting ripped off at the servo.”
Petrol stations that fail to register or report their prices now face fines of more than $3,000 for each breach, or more than $24,000 if taken to court.
Servo Saver, which can be found on the Service Victoria app, was introduced last year as the first phase of the government’s Fair Fuel Plan.
Since October, more than 265,000 Victorians have used it.
It’s estimated that Victorians using the app save up to $333 a year at the pump.
“The new 24-hour price cap will help you shop around for the best deal and put more downward pressure on prices,” Victorian Minister for Consumer Affairs Nick Staikos said.
The daily fuel price cap became law on March 10, 2026.
